California stands out as one of the states most severely impacted by the child care crisis, with an estimated economic toll of $17 billion due to lost earnings, productivity, and revenue. Child care workers in California have organized to address their grievances, forming the Child Care Providers United union. This union represents over 40,000 home-based child care providers and has successfully negotiated for improved benefits and wages within the industry.
